Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was an Italian architect and more prominently the leading sculptor of his age, creating the Baroque style of sculpture under Pope VIII Urbano. A promoter of the arts, Urban VIII was the foremost patron of this important Baroque sculptor and architect, some of whose finest works he commissioned, including the loggias of St. Peter, Rome, and Urban’s tomb in the basilica.
