THE WORKS:
This image is part of the project ‘Exercises in Freedom’.
- ‘Exercises in Freedom’ is an ongoing series that explores notions of migration, sexuality and relativity of freedom merging photography and physical performance with elements of contemporary choreography. Members of LGBTQIA+ community together with the photographer find corporeal manifestations of various mental states.
The series exists in 2 parts. First chapter was shot in the Netherlands and documented my desire to see Russian gay men find a place of belonging in a tolerant community. Chapter 2 was shot in Russia after I had to move back there. This chapter charts the psychology of repatriation to an increasingly isolated, politically paralysed and homophobic society, and my search for safe spaces there.
Its social aspect aside, the series is a research on borders between stillness and movement, sensuality and drama.

Alex Avgud is a Russian-born photography graduate from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). His work is a continuous exploration of human resistance to mechanisms of oppression. Studies at KABK are very concept-driven. So in the last two years when the period of short assignments finishes, and you start working on long-term projects, the search for a theme or an approach can take a while. It was important to just get going somewhere without having doubts. Just to do what you want, and only after reflect on it. Don’t kill ideas too quickly, see on which journey they can take you—if you allow them to. In reflections of light. In a drop of sweat. In love and pain. In social developments and politics. In sculpture. In the nighttime. It can be almost anything, really.

- Nude with Zinc Vessel (The back view of a nude woman holding a zinc object)By Eric Kellerman (b. 1944)Located in New Orleans, LAEric Kellerman created this sensual nude photograph of a young nude woman with a large zinc vessel under her arm. It is pencil signed, titled and numbered 1 from an edition of 20. The photographer has stamped a red monogram next to his signature. Eric Kellerman is a Briton who has lived near Nijmegen in the Netherlands for just over half his life. In 2008, he retired from academic life to spend more time on photography. Kellerman works almost entirely in the studio and uses digital equipment from camera to print, although image manipulation is limited to darkroom-like processes. Specializing in the nude, he has a regular team of female collaborators, most of whom have a serious interest in movement (dance, drama therapy, athletics, martial arts). Kellerman used to consider his work to be distant, abstract, melancholic, ‘unerotic’, despite its subject matter. Now he's not so sure. He emphasizes line, geometrical form, texture, implicit movement, and above all, chiaroscuro. He likes to create ambiguity in his photos, so that the viewer is sometimes unsure what part of the body is being looked at. In this way, he attempts to free the female body of its conventional associations. He has been influenced by surrealism...Category
