“Easy on the Eyes: Lélia” Portrait Photograph of a Beautiful Man in a Kitchen

About the Item

“Easy on the Eyes: Lélia“ is a staged photograph of an attractive man buttoning his shirt. In this cinematic photo series, I explore the female gaze by providing visual pleasure specifically designed for a female viewer—though others may look over her shoulder. Each scene includes a male character depicted in mid-narrative and an “implied woman” somewhere just outside the frame. She is not visible, but we see a flowery card spilling cash on the kitchen table and imagine it came from her. He is the photograph’s subject matter, but she is the narrative’s protagonist. Each photograph is titled after the female character in the quoted text. The text panel and image are printed together on a single sheet of paper. The implied narrative of the photograph is juxtaposed with a passage from a novel or short story by a prominent female author describing a male character. The text disrupts, misdirects, and complicates the implied narrative of the photographic image (read text below). This photograph is an Archival Pigment Print on Cotton Fiber Paper, printed in a limited-edition of 10. The standard print sizes are 15 x 30” and 20 x 40”. The photograph is signed and numbered on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prints are sold unframed; framing may be arranged for an additional cost. Free shipping may be available from 1st Dibs. Apply code: FREESHIP. Text panel: “Lélia" by George Sand. This Greek prince had the most handsome profile that antique sculpture had ever reproduced. He was as bronze as Othello, for there was Moorish blood in his family, and his black eyes burned with a savage sparkle; he was as tall and slim as the Oriental palm. There was in him something of the cedar tree, of the Arabian horse, of the Bedouin, and of the gazelle. All the women were mad about him. . . . He said little to her, but in a voice so harmonious, in such a poetic style, with such penetrating looks, and with such an inspired expression that Lélia paused for five minutes to observe him as a prodigy. Then she thought of something else.
