"The Carousel. Palm Beach Zoo. West Palm Beach. 2015" is a Dye Sublimation Print on Aluminium. This print is available from an Edition of 10 + 2 Artist Proofs in this size. Rachel Louise Brown graduated from the Royal College of Art, MA Photography (2011), following a year-long artist residency at the School of Visual Arts, NYC (2009) and BA (Hons) Photography at the London College of Communication, UAL (2008). Brown completed Simulations during an artist-in-residency programme at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. She decided to focus on the oft-advertised image of Florida as the land of escapism, entertainment and thrills, a symbol of the American Dream. Exploring local attractions alone and after hours, including the Palm Beach Zoo, Mar-a-Lago, Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairground and The Breakers, and juxtaposing portraits of young ballerinas, gymnasts and marching bands who are trained to entertain, Brown has produced a personal and intentionally objective view of these familiar landmarks in this highly original and compelling collection of work. Simulations was selected for the ‘Women in Photography’ Photo London Pavilion Commission 2019 alongside Mary McCartney and Susan Meiselas. Alongside her photographic practice, Brown is the Photography Director of Harper’s Bazaar + Town & Country (UK), an associate lecturer at Leeds Arts University & Huddersfield University and a mentor at University of the Arts, London.

The practice and potential of Photo Therapy is something that has long interested Rachel Louise Brown, so during the pandemic lockdowns, she decided to explore for herself, photography’s power to heal. Building a small studio set in her living room, she used the performative nature of self-portraiture as a tool to cope with her grief, frustration and fear, instinctively gravitating towards clowns as a subject. Alongside conjuring clown characters, having hired archival and historical outfits from the National Theatre & Clown Museum and attempted the art of clown make up, Brown was keen to learn new analogue techniques – particularly some of the earliest ones that have led to the world of photography as we know it today. Since then, Brown has attempted to master the historical alchemical process of salt printing. Invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in the mid-1830s, salt printing was the earliest photographic method capable of fixing a negative to positive image on paper. Using salt water...
