Anna Kunz
Flood Tide #30

2021

About the Item

"Flood Tide #30" is a unique monotype that Anna Kunz created during her visit to Manneken Press in July 2021; thirty six unique prints resulted from this intense work session. Inspired by water imagery, colors and forms revealed by chance and the wave-like back and forth motion of the press, Kunz titled the series “Flood Tide”. Using geometric compositions inspired by the rules of geometry found in nature, Kunz has created a visual ecosystem within the prints. The “Flood Tide” prints were created using oil based inks and watercolor. Each impression is unique, printed on 22” x 20” Arches Cover paper, with the image extending to the edges of the paper. The front, lower margin carries the artist's initials and date in pencil; the title is on the back. The Manneken Press blindstamp is impressed into the lower margin. The print is sold unframed. Framing recommendations: float mounted on museum board or floated within an 8-ply window mat, in a quality, contemporary gallery frame. Anna Kunz is a Chicago-based artist whose work encompasses painting, sculpture and installation. Grounded in a rigorous generative process, Kunz collapses hierarchies between media and sensory experiences, often using painted and dyed fabrics that function like nets to capture and manipulate light and color to create immersive environments. Her work is a testament to the continued possibilities for painting to create a space of contemplation, unification and joy. Kunz has also collaborated with architects, musicians and dancers to create spaces for dance and theatrical productions, including Merce Cunningham Dance Company, The Performance Collective and Industry of the Ordinary. Anna Kunz has exhibited her work widely, including recent solo exhibitions at Alexander Berggruen Gallery, NYC; Galerie Urbane, Dallas; McCormick Gallery, Chicago. “Color Cast”, a large scale installation at the Hyde Park Art Center, was mounted in 2018. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections. Kunz has served as a curatorial advisor for several private organizations and artists. She operated Kunz Vis Projects, a Chicago exhibition space, and is co-founding director of the national artist-run space Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s Chicago branch. Kunz has been awarded numerous artist residencies, including the Golden Family Foundation Residency, Edward Albee Foundation Residency, the Space Program at Marie Sharpe Walsh Foundation and the Roger Brown Artist Residency. Kunz earned a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Northwestern University.

  • Bouquet (sweeet pea, blue, magenta)
    By Catherine Howe
    Located in Bloomington, IL
"Bouquet (sweet pea, blue, magenta)" is a unique collagraph print on Rives BFK paper from a series published by Manneken Press in 2019. This is a bleed print with the edges extending to the edges of the paper. In collagraph printmaking the artist adds to the plate to create the image rather than carving into it, as in relief printing, or etching into it, as in intaglio printing. Howe painted the image of a bouquet of flowers in a vase with sweeping, fluid brushstrokes strokes, directly onto the plate, using a thick gel medium. Carborundum grit was added to create the texture necessary to hold the ink. Different colors were used for each impression printed from the plate, creating a series of unique but related prints. Like all of Howe's works, her monotypes have a strong, vibrant, spontaneous energy and a sensuous sensibility. Referencing her personal garden located in the Hudson Valley, flowers dissolve into abstract flurries of brush marks and fields of commingled colors. The artist balances abstraction with representation in gestural prints which are process-based while retaining an affinity with the observed subject matter. Catherine Howe is widely admired for her painterly works that reference both the baroque and nature. Drawing from nature, Howe’s paintings is influenced by New York School abstraction, as well as rococo and 17th century Dutch still life paintings. Catherine Howe received an MFA from SUNY Buffalo in 1983. Her paintings have been exhibited extensively in New York, and the United States, including solo exhibitions at New York Academy of Art, Winston Wächter...
