About the Item

An original screenprint, exhibition poster on light wove paper after English artist Bridget Riley (1931-) titled "Bridget Riley Hayward Gallery (Firebird)", 1971. Edition size unknown. Printed by PKM studio and published by Hayward Gallery both in London, UK. Poster produced for a special retrospective exhibition of Riley's work "Bridget Riley: Paintings and Drawings 1951-1971" at the Hayward Gallery from July 21 - September 5, 1971. The image featured on this poster is of Riley's 1971 screenprint edition "Firebird". This poster was made with the same original screens from the signed and numbered edition. Reference: (the 1971 original) - "Bridget Riley: Complete Prints" - Schubert No. 9; Arts Council No. 16. Provenance: private collection - Middletown, RI. Recently framed in a contemporary white maple moulding. Framed size: 31.25" x 41.25". Sheet size: 30" x 40". Image size: 26.25" x 37.75". Scattered soft handling creases to sheet and some light edge wear. In otherwise very good condition with clean paper and strong colors. Extremely rare. This was Riley's first large-scale UK exhibition, being the first contemporary painter to have a full-scale retrospective at the Hayward Gallery, and also the second largest retrospective exhibition devoted to a British artist to be held at the Hayward. It was organized by the Arts Council as part of a European tour, which traveled to venues in Hannover, Bern, Dusseldorf, Turin, and Prague. "Firebird" is the first print in colors in Bridget Riley's canon, and thus occupies an important place in the history of Op Art. Vertical twisting bars of the three primary colors Red, Blue and Green, separated by equal areas of uncolored space, generate a powerful, spirited and active array of imagined colors for the viewer. The eye constantly darts over the composition conjuring yellows, oranges and mauves which are the product of a diligently and brilliantly produced investigation into relative hue. In this respect "Firebird" is equally as successful as the most vibrant of her mid-60s black and white works, and hints towards her future development in color which would shortly produce the well known series of twisted curves. - from Archeus / Post-Modern Riley was born at Norwood, London, the daughter of a businessman. Her childhood was spent in Cornwall and Lincolnshire. She studied at Goldsmiths' College from 1949 to 1952, and at the Royal College of Art from 1952 to 1955. She began painting figure subjects in a semi-impressionist manner, then changed to pointillism around 1958, mainly producing landscapes. In 1960 she evolved a style in which she explored the dynamic potentialities of optical phenomena. Riley taught children for two years before joining the Loughborough School of Art, where she initiated a basic design course in 1959. She then taught at Hornsey School of Art, and from 1962 at Croydon School of Art. She worked for the J. Walter Thompson Group advertising agency from 1960, but gave up teaching and advertising agency work in 1963-4. Riley was awarded the AICA Critics Prize in 1963 and also that year a John Moores', Liverpool Open Section prize. In 1964 she was awarded a Peter Stuyvesant Foundation Travel bursary to the USA. In 1968 she won an International Painting Prize at the Venice Biennale. Her first solo exhibition was held at Gallery One in 1962 with a second solo show the following year. Other solo shows were held at Nottingham University, 1963; Richard Feigen Gallery, New York and Feigen Palmer Gallery, Los Angeles, 1965; Museum of Modern Art, New York, with US tour, 1966; Venice Biennale, British Pavilion (with Phillip King), 1968; Hayward Gallery, London, 1971; National Gallery, Prague, 1971; Hayward Gallery and Kunsthalle Nuremberg, 1992; Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, 1995; and Waddington Galleries, London, 1996.
