About the Item
Titled Carnival with bright colors and geometric shape of a circus carousel, this bears some elements of the color field blocks of Mark Rothko.
New York born painter and printmaker, Rita Leff studied under Louis Schanker, Abraham Rattner and Adja Yunkers at the Art Students League, New York, the Brooklyn Museum School of Art and at Parsons School of Design. She began to exhibit her art in 1950 with the Brooklyn Society of Artists. Later she exhibited with the Audubon Artists (1955-58), the Boston Printmakers, the Society of American Graphic Arts and the National Association of Women Artists.
In 1971 Rita Leff moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, where she died in 1979.
She was a member of the Audubon Artists, the National Association of Women Artists and the Society of American Graphic Artists. Her original prints and paintings are included in the collections of such major institutions as the Brooklyn Museum, Library of Congress, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania State University and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The other four artists who contributed were Robert Longo, Keith Haring, William Katz and Gretchen Bender. Bill Katz was born in New York, studied at The Art Students League and with Sebastiano Mineo of New York City. He was the studio assistant to Robert Indiana for more than a decade, initiating and arranging print projects for the artist, including Numbers (1968), with poems by Robert Creeley.For five years he worked and lived in the home that was once occupied by the great American sculptor Gutson Borglum. He also spearheaded the project of the cover artwork at Chanterelle with the full roster of distinguished contributing artists, photographers, musicians, and writers — Marisol, Chuck Close, Jasper Johns and Robert Mapplethorpe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office.
