About the Item
Original color silkscreen, cca. 1970. Edition of 70 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper.
Marko Spalatin was a modern and contemporary artist from Croatia, who immigrated to the USA in his late teens. His artwork is characterized by abstract geometric forms defined by interesting manipulation of color and light. This interplay of forms, colors and lights primary creates a spatial illusion of three-dimensionality and also different effects. “I find that precisely defined areas of color, when placed against each other, compete for dominance. This activity, when further accentuated by tonal structure, produces multiple levels of perception. A given area of uniformly applied pigment loses its flat character through simultaneous contrast with the surrounding colors.” Spalatin used traditional perspective here, creating slight distortions in order to generate movement and affect the distribution of color so it gives a sense of three dimensions.
