Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist once said of Pettibon's Black Flag illustrations and iconic logo: "Before I knew what Black Flag was I remember walking around Hollywood and seeing Raymond's flyers and being like, 'What the fuck is that?'… Those flyers made me feel like something is going on and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is but I wanna know." About Raymond Pettibon (American b.1957): Having emerged from the Southern California DIY culture and its punk-rock sensibility, Raymond Pettibon fuses together youthful edginess and political engagement. Drawing from disparate cultural sources—from Marcel Proust to the Bible—the artist’s cartoon-inspired ink drawings on unframed paper recall the look of fanzines and concert flyers, however with an often cryptic semblance of narrative. More recently, Pettibon’s works have been a sustained critique of the Iraq War and American foreign policy, such as No Title ("Why press him?") (2007), which depicts George W. Bush with bloodied hands and surrounded by pointed, ironic commentary. Pettibon was a recipient of the Whitney's Bucksbaum award in 2004. In November of 2017, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg hosted Homo Americanus, a major survey of Pettibon’s work, encompassing over six hundred works from every part of the artist’s career, a majority of which have never been shown before. This major exhibition was also accompanied by a publication of the same name, documenting these same early works. In February 2017, the New Museum presented 'A Pen of All Work,' a major solo exhibition of Pettibon’s work featuring 700 plus drawings from the 1960s to the present - the artist’s first museum survey in New York and most comprehensive presentation of his work to date. Robert Rauschenberg and Cris Gianakos RAUSCHENBERG (Scarce and collectible early invitation), 1970 Offset Lithograph Invitation 8 7/10 × 11 9/10 inches Unframed Offset lithograph invitation created on the occasion of Robert Rauschenberg's exhibition at SVA's Visual Arts Gallery in 1970. The poster was designed by Cristos Gianakos, who was also a professor at SVA, and the show was curated by Felice Wender, the director of Dayon's Gallery 12 in Minneapolis. The invitation states that "after completing its New York debut, the show will open at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in January 4, 1971 and continue through January 29, 1971. In May, 1971, Dayton's Gallery 12, Minneapolis, Minnesota will exhibit the new Rauschenberg works..." The text on this invitation additionally states that Rauschenberg said in a written statement about these works: "The image and the words cooperate to construct a flat re-reading of the facts plus familiar passing insignificancies that control our day. Information, originally engaged in a daily rhetorical screen to eliminate as much direct feeling and response as possible, re-exposed to encourage consideration..."
