Banksy
Rat Stencil

2002

About the Item

Sold framed Banksy created this Rat stencil as an magazine insert very early in his art career in 2002. Rats are central characters in Banksy's oeuvre and here he give this rat plenty of attitude with a cigarette hanging from its mouth and a shovel in hand. He wrote the following in his book Wall and Piece: “On Painting Rats, and the Glorification of Them. They exist without permission. They are hated, hunted and persecuted. They live in quiet desperation amongst the filth. And yet they are capable of bringing entire civilizations to their knees. If you are dirty, insignificant, and unloved then rats are the ultimate role model.”
