Engraved in the 19th century after Wolstenholme's 1803 oil painting. This engraving sees two riders rather than one, a slightly different topography, and more generous foliage in the foreground.
A coursing scene: two lithe greyhounds compete to catch a hare; their gentleman owners ride behind, with their galloping horses mimicking the hounds’ bodies.
Dean Wolstenholme the elder was an English animal painter born in Yorkshire. Coursing was the first picture he exhibited at the Royal Academy (in 1803) and his animal pictures were show at the Academy every subsequent year until 1824.
