Vintage David Hockney poster Young Playwrights Festival 1982

1982

About the Item

A masked performer gestures his hands, wearing bright green garb, a long hat, and jaunty black shoes with white socks. Hockney paints in loose strokes of color: garnet, sapphire, bright yellow, and emerald green. This vintage David Hockney poster features a detail from Pulcinella With Applause. Pulcinella is an important character in Southern Italian puppetry, a lively jester whose alternate helplessness and cunning lead to victory over all obstacles. The character usually has a leather mask with a long nose, as seen here. This poster was designed by David Hockney for the Young Playwrights Festival held in New York in 1982 and sponsored by the Dramatists Guild Fund. This vintage poster was designed by the artist in our studio and comes directly from our Petersburg Press archive. It is not pre-owned.
