About the Item

Anders Zorn (Utmeland/Dalarne, 1860 - Mora/Sweden, 1920) The Two", 1916 Signed in pencil lower right and monogrammed and dated in the plate. Etching on laid paper. 35,5 x 23 cm; 20,2 x 14,5 cm, o. R. Provenance Private collection, Baden-Württemberg. Anders Zorn is one of Sweden's most important and famous artists. His contemporaries regarded the painter, graphic artist and sculptor as a "genius of the century" and "one of the best artists of our era". Born in 1860, Anders Zorn could already look back on a remarkable international career at the age of just forty. Acquisitions from renowned museums, countless awards and various foreign academy memberships testify to the high esteem in which Zorn was held throughout Europe, Russia and the USA at the time. In his home country, the artist has long held a firm place in the Olympus of art history. In Germany, however, where the Swede also enjoyed great success at the turn of the century thanks to his painter friend Max Liebermann, he is now being rediscovered. Zorn's shimmering watercolors, especially the impressive sea studies, his equally delicate and powerful brushstrokes in the oil paintings and finally the delicately hatched etchings not only fascinated his contemporaries but also impress to this day with their technical virtuosity. Zorn's loose, fresh style of painting inspired the younger generation of artists in particular. The German Secessionists in particular regarded Zorn as a shining example in their fight against traditional academic painting, which was perceived as artificial and "unnatural".
