Original "Back Our Girls Over There, YWCA vintage WW1 poster

1918

About the Item

Original Back Our Girls Over There Y.W.C.A. WW1 antique poster: Linen-backed original Beautiful Y.W.C.A. Telephone operator sitting at the control panel switches while the soldiers march by in the background. Beautifully printed and in good condition. Y.W.C.A.'s poster for the United War Work Campaign shows a young woman seated at a switchboard with soldiers in the background. Some horizontal stress creases in the poster were made flat by the linen backing. This YMCA poster by Clarence F. Underwood (1871-1929) illustrates a Signal Corps worker. Known as “Hello Girls” these women wore military uniforms and conformed to military law but were considered civilian military employees. During World War I, the YWCA was the only women’s organization of the seven ultimately affiliated with the government’s Commission on Training Camp Activities (CTCA) and the only one fully dedicated to serving women. Antique posters are 'pictures of persuasion,' as we might call them, and offer a wealth of art, history, design, and popular culture for us to understand. The poster is a familiar part of our world, and we intuitively understand its role as propaganda, promotion, announcement, or advertisement." This is an Original Lithograph Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction.
