Lithographies originales de Jean de l'Étang, 1952. Published and printed by atelier Jean Dulac, Paris. Excerpted from Christie’s, Paris (translated from French), Original edition of these superb erotic lithographs, among the most sensual of the 1950s, due to the Lyon painter and illustrator Jean Dulac (1902-1968) under the "transparent" pseudonym of Jean de l'Étang. Print in 200 numbered copies [on the colophon], the first 30 reserved for subscribers with an original sketch. Catalogue raisonne reference, Jean Pierre Dutel 2511.
Excerpted from the volume (translated from French), Want to review the various metamorphoses of venus: not all, to the truth: how would it be possible to list the thousand inventions, the thousand postures to which the ingenious satiety of pleasure dares to resort? But at least those who, attaching to determined genres, easily lend themselves to a methodical classification. Do not go, curious reader, to rehear your mind with another hope. I am not a man looking for gloriole by revealing the result of personal experiences or newly attempted trials in this kind of crime: I did not even learn there. I don't give the example. She preceded me, this astyanassa who, at the testimony of suidas, treated the first "Of the various erotic postures", she preceded me, this phila nis of samos. He preceded me again, this man of a divine genius, pierre arétin, and this lorenzo veniero, noble venetian, author of a booklet "La puttana er-rante", in which he took it upon himself to list us up to thirty-five ways of making love. He finally preceded me this nicolas chorier, french jurisconsult, who gave under the name of luisa sigea, a young spaniard, the "Sotadic satire, of the arcanes of love and venus". And how many others again. My predecessors, even the oldest, those I have just mentioned and whom I very much regret that time has destroyed all the works, have not lacked harsh cencers and no more studious readers. Neither of them will probably fail in my book. I drew it, indifferent to the fame, for those who do not like, by frowning, to pick up nature with a fork, for those who have once had the courage to live, who do not want to hide in the darkness, nor yet to perform brazenly in the open, who think, finally, that in the things of love, as in all things, the best is to enjoy an honest mediocrity. Let the others go for a walk and keep the name of sages for themselves!
JEAN DULAC (1902-1968) Born Bourgoin, Jean Dulac entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (1915-1924) where he proved to be an excellent draftsman. During his studies he won many first prizes for drawing. Above all, he perfected his skills in the sculpture class and obtained the Paris Prize, allowing him to become the workshop leader of master Paul Landowski, Grand Prix de Rome for sculpture. He created his first paintings around 1938, self-taught, and inspired by the masters including Picasso, achieved a mastery of this new discipline with great ease: during the war, while mobilized in Annecy, he painted regularly because he was unable to practice sculpture. Dulac shows a great focus in his work on the female nude in painting, creating highly sensual, stylised life studies. The early nudes, still imbued with academic conventions, give way to an expressive abstraction of bodies treated in volumes. Alongside these, his remit was broad and varied, encompassing landscapes, still life and abstract work. Jean Dulac became president of the Salon de la Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts which he founded in 1946, until his death in 1968.
