Beautiful Bath , No. 23 1996 by Karl Gerich of Bath - Playing Card Proof Print

1996

About the Item

Karl Alexander Gerich (English, 23.4.1956 - 4.1.2016) Beautiful Bath No. 23, 1996 - Etching - Sheet ca. 29.9 x 29.9 cm - No plate mark (trimmed sheet) Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. This pack is said to be Karl’s declaration of Love to his chosen city of Bath. Each card narrates a part of Bath’s rich history. The court cards depict portraits of personalities – real and legendary – who shaped the city of Bath as it is today. Unfinished, proof print with depictions of the court cards of diamonds and clubs, but an empty cartouche where Karl himself will appear at a later state as the joker, playing mandolin. On one of the documenting photos you can see a photo copy of what the joker card would look like. Sheet is in good condition and suitable to be framed. Karl was a brilliant playing card maker and certainly one of the most genius artist-craftsmen I had the pleasure to learn about his work and know. He could do it all: Come up with the tale, weave meaning(s) into it, fill it with spirited characters of his liking, draw it, etch it, print it, colour it and handcraft the inks, paper and card into wondersome packs of playing cards, each of them living in their own, most exquisitely crafted boxes. Every pack a magical marvel, filled with the spirit of this genius card maker … All this he did using his Adana printing press, very simple hand tools and great skill. When Karl closed down his studio in St.Peter’s Terrace in Bath, England and moved to Poplar Close, he sold off work for which he felt he no longer wanted to be the custodian. So a number of prints reached the market then. Printed sheets by Karl Gerich don’t often turn up for sale – certainly a lot less than his scarce finished packs - as he never really considered his proofs as to be saleable. To him they were after all only unfinished playing cards, more like samples and he generally would get rid of them. However once in a while he would produce finely finished (uncut), signed sheets, intended for framing. As work progressed, Karl would print proofs of the copper plates at their various states, steadily completing all the yet to be etched surfaces and dry point retouching the individual images as the whole design neared its completion to be ready to print Karl’s magic. Today, Karl’s work is widely recognized and examples of his work command respectable prices on the secondary markets. I am selling here a selection from my collection acquired between 1993 and 2004 of proof prints proof prints in various states, spare sheets (overproduction in case a single card needs to be replaced) or sheets that just didn’t make it past Karl’s critical eye, to be finished into playing cards. All prints came directly from Karl to me and are unsigned. I guarantee unconditionally that the prints were designed and printed of the original plates by Master Card Maker Karl Gerich of Bath himself. For information on Karl Gerich I recommend the excellent pages published online by ‘The World of Playing Cards’ - Especially Karl Gerich’s illustrated catalogue raisonné. Compelling set of 25 etchings from an exciting new talent, Indian Artist Sonal Varshneya Ojha. The 25 works are Edition 4/7. Editions 1, 2 & 3 have already sold, Edition 2 has been purchased by a Museum Collection in Belgium. Loved by private clients and Interior designers alike, Sonal has exhibited at International art fairs and exhibited with leading Galleries. Vachik, Edition 4/7, 25 Etchings on Archival paper, dated 2022, signed and titled under each piece in pencil 65" x 50" (depending on hanging layout), without framing, comprising 25 etchings. Each etching, sheet size 17" x 14", image size 13" x 10" 2022 Signed, Editioned, dated and titled in pencil Provenance: From the artist's studio Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or her new Vachik stories, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that may or may not speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same. The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed from the older generations to the younger women. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels. In Sonal's own words, 'This work is very close to my heart, a lot of emotions are attached to this work. Some such feelings that awakened for the first time and they were priceless. I have lived that time, felt it very closely, whatever happened to me at that time, I have tried my best to make it work. Kajal has a very important role, when there are children and grandmothers complete it, it is said that by applying Kajal in the eyes of the children, the eyes become bigger.
