Artist: Kiyoshi Saito (Japanese, 1907-1997) Title: Children Year: Circa 1960 Medium: Color woodcut Edition: Unknown Paper: Japan Image (block mark) size: 9.5 x 4.25 inches paper size: 17 x 11.5 inches Signature: Hand signed in pencil by the artist Condition: excellent Frame: Custom framed in a bamboo style black wash frame, with fabric matting. Framed size is 20.75 x 14.75 inches About the artist. Kiyoshi Saito was one of the first artists of the Japanese sosaku hanga movement whose art became successful and was widely accepted and awarded by an international audience. In 1948, he exhibited at the Salon Printemps, and in 1951 received first prize for Steady Gaze at the inaugural Sao Paolo Bienniale. This event brought the modern school of Japanese prints to prominence. Today he is regarded as one of the great masters of modern Japanese printmaking after the end of the war in 1945.
