About the Item

"Jeremiah's Lamentations" by Marc Chagall is an original lithograph in colours (Mourlot 134) very good condition with strong colors. On the reverse: another original lithograph, in black ad white. (M 137) from removed from the book "Bible I" and is unsigned and unnumbered piece from an edition of 6500, This piece is is a clear impression on strong velin paper. Published by Éditions de la Revue Verve, Tériade, Paris. Cain, Julien, and Mourlot, Fernand. Unframed. Commissioned by the great Parisian Art publisher and dealer Vollard to create the Bible series, Chagall traveled to Palestine in the Spring of 1931 for inspiration. Albeit a Russian Jewish Artist Chagall notes “Ever since my earliest youth, I have been fascinated with the Bible. I have always believed that it is the greatest source of poetry of all time. I have sought its reflection in life and art. The Bible is life, an echo of nature, and this is the secret I have endeavored to transmit.”
