Richard Haas Villard Courtyard, St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York City, 1983 Color lithograph 29 1/2 × 41 1/2 inches Edition 23/50 Hand signed, numbered, and dated with publisher's blind stamp on lower left front This dramatic lithograph by Richard Haas, the world's foremost architectural muralist and trompe d'oeil artist depicts the courtyard at St. Patrick's Cathedral -the most celebrated church in New York City, a "decorated Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral church in the United States and a prominent landmark of New York City. It is the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York as well as parish church, located on the east side of Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets in Midtown Manhattan, directly across the street from Rockefeller Center, facing the Atlas statue. It is considered one of the most visible symbols of Roman Catholicism in New York City and the United States." The present work is hand signed and numbered from the limited edition of only 50. The night few underscores the dramatic, gothic aspects of the architecture. Unframed and in fine condition. More about Richard Haas: Richard Haas (b. 1936) is an iconic American painter and printmaker known for his trompe l’oeil style architectural murals. He grew up in Spring Green, Wisconsin, not far from Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright’s estate. Haas’s early exposure to Wright’s masterful architecture proved to be an enormous influence on his artistic interests. Richard Haas received a BS degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a MFA from the University of Minnesota before moving to New York City. He taught printmaking courses at Bennington College in Vermont for ten years before he decided to pursue a full-time career painting murals. Since 1979, he has painted over 120 murals, many of which were commissioned, at a variety of locations including the former Board of Education building in Brooklyn, the Boston Architectural Center, Chase Field, Edison Brothers Store Inc. in St. Louis, the Federal Building and Courthouse in Kansas City, and the main branch of the New York Public Library. Throughout his career, Richard Haas has also been elected a National Academician by the National Academy of Design, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a McDowell Fellow. He has received the American Institute of Architects Medal of Honor, the New York City Municipal Art Society Award, the Doris C. Freedman Award for Public Art, and the Jimmy Ernst Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. -Courtesy of Tandem Press

    "Approach to the Fortress of Ibrim, Nubia" is a 19th century folio sized hand-colored lithograph from the Egypt and Nubia volume of David Roberts’ large folio edition, published in London by F. G. Moon in 1847. The lithographs were prepared by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) from drawings and paintings by Roberts. The resultant large folio editions of 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia' are considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. The print is presented in a gold-colored wood frame with a decorative inner trim, with a cream-colored double mat. It is in excellent condition. The lithograph depicts the Fortress of Ibrim in Nubia in the background, which had been a Roman and an Egyptian fortification for centuries due to its strategic elevation, allowing a view of large portions of the surrounding desert. Men are securing the boat in the foreground for the night, taking down its sails. A herd of cattle drinks and cools themselves in the water on the left. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright, it has never been framed. About the artist: Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974.
