LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE (NOT SHOWN). ________________________________________ DATE OF PUBLICATION : R1787 (1781MS) PLACE OF PUBLICATION : PARIS DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP SHOWING THE BATTLE POSITIONS OF THE CONTENDING ARMIES AT YORKTOWN GIVES SUCH DETAILS AS ROADS, HOUSES, HOSPITALS, ARTILLERY PLACEMENT, ETC. VERNER SUGGESTS THAT THIS PRINTED MAP WAS TAKEN FROM A FRENCH MANUSCRIPT MAP OF THE SAME NAME IN THE ROCHAMBEAU COLLECTION (MSS. 59) IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THE PRINTED MAP APPEARED AT THE END OF THE FOURTH VOLUME OF THE SECOND EDITION OF FRANCOIS SOULES HISTOIRE DES TROUBLES DE L'AMERIQUE ANGLAISE, 8o, 4 VOLS., PARIS: BUISSON, 1787. THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND EMPHASIZED FRENCH AND SPANISH PARTICIPATION. THE FIRST EDITION, WHICH ROCHAMBEAU HELPED PREPARE, WAS PUBLISHED IN TWO VOLUMES IN LONDON BY SPILSBURY IN 1785 AND LACKED THE MAPS. THOMAS JEFFERSON HELPED IN THE ENLARGEMENT OF THE SECOND EDITION TO 4 VOLUMES. THE MAP SHOWS NO NAVAL POSITIONS.
