Candida Höfer is known for her images of empty interiors of libraries, museums, palaces and theatres, focusing on the cultural spaces free from human presence. Part of the artist’s latest exhibition at Sean Kelly Gallery, Candida Höfer in Mexico, Teatro Degollado Guadalajara III expands her signature attention to Mexican Baroque interiors. The self-imposed subject restrictions evident in her project are both cultural and formal in nature. The Baroque interiors of the Mexican Teatro Degollado Guadalajara provide a “formal portrait of the society itself”.
“Spaces may or may not invite the image—if they do, they mostly do it with their spatial layers of time… It is then the image that takes the place of the space; the image in its own right.„
—Candida Höfer
The daughter of a ballet dancer and a theater critic, it is not unusual for Höfer to occupy her photography practice with theaters and opera houses; a subject so dear to her as her childhood memories. Typical of Candida Höfer, the artist has photographed empty interiors of libraries, museums, palaces, and theaters, focusing on the cultural spaces free from human presence. As stated by the German artist, "spaces may or may not invite the image—if they do, they mostly do it with their spatial layers of time… It is then the image that takes the place of the space; the image in its own right."
The self-imposed subject restrictions evident in her project are both cultural and formal in nature. The Baroque, modern and contemporary interiors Höfer captures through her lens provide a “formal portrait of the social itself,” as it has been defined in Europe since the Enlightenment.
CANDIDA HÖFER
Candida Höfer has been photographing both public and semi-public spaces in a style defined by an anachronistic approach since 1989.
Candida Höfer (1944, Eberswalde, Germany) has been photographing both public and semi-public spaces in a style defined by an anachronistic approach since 1989. After studying at the Kölner Werkschule between 1964 and 1968, Candida Höfer attended the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf (Germany), initially reading film with Ole John (1973-1976) and then photography with Bernd Becher (1976 -1982). Following in the tradition of the Düsseldorf School of photography, Candida Höfer has often captured images of waiting rooms, spa resorts, banks, churches, libraries, theaters, and museums.
"I do my work. My work is my statement. Generally, I think, there is too much interest in what an artist has to say. Or what she or he looks like, instead of what she or he does." —Candida Höfer
These transitional spaces are also places where universal culture is accumulated, organized, and conserved to an encyclopedic degree, and are photographed by the artist with a rigor and simplicity approaching minimalism. Immediately recognizable, Candida Höfer’s photographs crystallize the peculiar inherent in places where often an illustrious history clashes with their present-day use. As in Spiegelkantine at Hamburg’s Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, the lighting for these neutral shots comes solely from the natural light of the location. Spaces normally packed with visitors are shown devoid of human presence: all that remains are the outlines of these architectural products of culture or industry.

Candida Hofer
Born 1944, Eberswalde, Germany; lives in Cologne, Germany. Candida Höfer is particularly well-known for her technical perfection and conceptual approach to her art. She produces large-format color photographs of architectural interiors that double as systematic visual studies of social and public spaces, devoid of human presence. Her works chronicle the physiology of social architecture and are noted for their subtle allusions to human activity. Höfer is meticulous in her practice and is determined to do “justice” to the places she photographs; throughout her career she has photographed spectacular cultural spaces including libraries, museums, theaters, universities, as well as historic houses and palaces. Candida Höfer has exhibited widely in her native Germany and abroad, in museums such as Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen in Dusseldorf; Museum Ludwig in Cologne; Newport Harbor Art Museum in Newport Beach, California; Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Australia and the Saint Louis Art Museum in Saint Louis, Missouri, to name a few. Her photographs are found in public and private collections throughout the world, including the Bibliothëque Nationale de France, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, New York, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.

- "Inside of a House in Nootka Sound" (Canada) from Captain Cook's 3rd VoyageBy John WebberLocated in Alamo, CA"The Inside of a House in Nootka Sound" is an engraving created by William Sharp (1749-1824), from a drawing by John Webber (1752-1793), who was the artist on Captain James Cook's 3rd and final voyage of discovery. It is Plate 65 in "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean Undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere", the official British Admirality sanctioned journal published upon completion of the voyage in London in 1784 by Strahan & Cadell. This engraving is presented in a Koa wood frame and a white mat. There are occasional tiny faint spots, but the print is otherwise in very good condition. Koa wood is legendary in Hawaii. Not only is this amazing wood native to Hawaii, but it is known for the deep rich colors and varied grain pattern. Koa has an honored heritage in Hawaii and is highly revered and sacred. The word “koa” means “warrior” in Hawaiian. The warriors of King Kamehameha the Great, created canoes and weapons from a wood plentiful on the Big Island of Hawaii. This wood became synonymous with the warriors themselves, and it became known as koa. There are three other engravings listed form the official journal of Captain Cook's 3rd voyage available that are presented in identical Koa wood frames and mats. They would make a wonderful grouping for a display of 2, 3 or 4 prints. Please see listings: LU117324682432, LU117324684022, LU117324684062. A discount is available for a grouping depending on the number of items included. Nootka Sound is on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It was explored by Captain Cook in 1778 after he discovered Hawaii during his 3rd voyage. He originally named it King George's Sound, but did record Nootka Sound, which he thought was its native name. Hawaii was originally called The Sandwich Islands in honor of The Earl of...Category
