About the Item

Wonderful print with artist's title and description (written in pen and ink) "'Law of the Flaming Frontier' Interior of Pioneer Cabin with a gun and a rifle in Tombstone AZ when the West was young." By Harold Edgar Wenck (American, 1886-1958), circa 1920s. Signed within print and hand-signed below title/description (in pen and ink). Presented in a giltwood period frame. H. E. Wenck (also known as Joe) was born in Fort Assiniboine, Montana in 1896. According to an article in Arizona Kitty Kat (Vol. XII, No. 6), he had a variety of careers in the West. In 1951, he published a book of poems and drawings entitled Phantoms of Old Tombstone published by Arizona Silhouettes, Tucson, Arizona, in 1951. In addition to being an artist, he self identified as an “engineer, scholar, adventurer.” Records indicate he was the illustrator of several books including "No New Frontiers: Eleven Stories inspired by Arizona Sunshine" by John Dun and published by the Roycrofters of Aurora, New York in 1938. Wenck was born in Montana on August 15, 1886, and passed away on October 10, 1958. At the time of his death he was residing in Lakeside, Arizona.
