Roberto Matta
“The function of art,” the Surrealist Roberto Matta once stated, “is to unveil the enormous economic, cultural and emotional forces that materially interact in our lives and that constitute the real space in which we live.” In his paintings, Matta sought to expose those forces through the Surrealist practice of automatism, creating work in a free-associative state intended to conjure the unconscious.
After studying architecture in his native Chile, Matta, then 22, chose to pursue the field in Paris, where he mingled with stars of the avant-garde like Gertrude Stein, Salvador Dalí and Walter Gropius. In the late 1930s, he abandoned Paris, together with his job at Le Corbusier’s studio and (for a time) his career, for modern art’s new epicenter, New York City. There, he became a colleague of art legends like Marcel Duchamp and Arshile Gorky.
Although celebrated primarily for his work as a painter, Matta was an equally talented furniture designer. His furniture pieces, like his artworks, are the stuff of dreams. The back of his totem chair, for example, is composed of smiling, cartoonish creatures stacked on top of each other. In his MAgriTTA armchair, the top half of a plush green apple sticks out of large black bowler in homage to its namesake, the Belgian Surrealist René Magritte.
But perhaps the piece that most truly embodies his artistic philosophy is his 1966 Mallite modular system: a collection of spongy, undulating sofas and lounges that can be fitted together to form a puzzle-like room divider. The work, an original edition of which is in MoMA’s permanent collection, has in recent decades been a hard-to-find collectors’ item — until 2019, when Italian design brand Paradisoterrestre issued a reedition, available through Duplex.

- VICTOR VASARELY - OEUVRES PROFONDES CINETIQUES I - 1973By Victor VasarelyLocated in Pembroke Pines, FLArtist: Victor Vasarely Title: Profound Works I Year: 1973 Not signed or numbered, as published Dimensions: 12 in. by 12 in. Framed Edition: From the Rare Limited Edition Publisher: Editions du Griffon Neuchatel Suite: Profound Works Medium: 3D, Serigraph on Acitate Over Serigraph on Paper Condition: Excellent Victor Vasarely (French/Hungarian, 1906–1997) is known as the father of the Op Art movement. As a painter, he created intricate abstractions that suggested depth and dimensionality using a variety of optical illusions, with surfaces seeming to bulge out of the canvas. His works present color, form, and pattern as a single interconnected element—a concept that was critical to the foundation of the Op Art movement and the focus of his mature works. Vasarely initially studied medicine at the Budapest University in his early 20s, only to abandon his medical studies to attend to the Muhely Academy, the center of the Bauhaus movement in Budapest. While there, he was profoundly influenced by the work of color theorist and artist Josef Albers, as well as the Constructivist methods promoted by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky. While Vasarely’s earlier work was concerned more with color theory, during the 1950s and 1960s his work became more focused on the optical potential of the two-dimensional surface. He began to use complex and colorful patterns to actively engage the viewer’s eye, and to convey a sense of kinetic energy across the two-dimensional surface. Vasarely’s work was heavily influenced by his time spent at Breton Beach of Belle Isle...Category

- The MoMA LibraryBy Xiaoze XieLocated in Surfside, FLThis piece is part of an ongoing project entitled "Fragmentary Views" (2001 - Present) by Xiaoze Xie, which is a series of paint-compositions based upon photographs of found newspaper piles. For Xie, stacks of printed pages represent not only cultural memory and the passage of time, but the ways in which history is interpreted and recorded according to various belief systems and political agendas. This is a lithograph, signed, dated 2006, and numbered 28/30 The artist continues his ongoing series of works, Fragmentary Views (2001 to present), which explores the vulnerability and fragmentary nature of historical memory, and the general and superficial perception of world events in the age of ready global media. The paintings depict stacked newspapers where only bits of information are visible-a greater understanding is implicit, but just out of view. "What interests me most is the temporary nature of this mundane object loaded with all-encompassing information of changing daily life: from the front-page news to stock market columns to birth announcements and obituaries. Newspapers are recycled. Life goes on." - Xiaoze Xie In the compressed stacks of newspapers, viewers will notice partial images of fragile life in Baghdad, distraught looks of disbelief of suicide attack victims, the building site of the World Trade Center, campaigns against Fa Lung Gong, and, more recent events that are closer to home. The gravity of these events is muffled as it is embedded in the mundane scroll of daily life. Xiaoze Xie immigrated from the People's Republic of China in 1992, where he was born and studied art and architecture. He has MFA degrees from Beijing and North Texas University, and taught at Bucknell University before assuming his post as Professor of Art at Stanford. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and distinguished private collections.
