He majored in art history at the University of California at Berkeley, but fearing that he would be unable to make a living as an artist, he went on to earn his M.D. at the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco. Art won out in the end; after completing his medical studies, Goldyne studied at Harvard, earning an M..A. in fine arts in 1970. Before attending Harvard, in 1968 he had made his first prints in black-and-white at the Impressions Workshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After seeing the catalogue for an exhibition of Degas monotypes, Goldyne began to produce monotypes and lithographs. Returning to San Francisco after completing his studies at Harvard, he continued to print at the studio of Jeanne Gantz in Berkeley. In 1973 his first solo exhibition of prints was presented at the Quay Gallery in San Francisco. An immediate success, the show helped to bring monotypes to the publics attention. In 1976 Goldyne produced a series of monotype books, and in 1985 he undertook a monumental book project titled Het Achterhuis/Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl. It was shown in 1986 at the Jewish Community Museum in San Francisco. Lane, William Merritt Chase: Still Lifes, Interiors, Figures, Copies of Old Masters, and Drawings, Catalogue Raisonne, Vol. IV (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2010), Vol. 1, M. 8. (See photos of entry) William Merritt Chase (1840-2016) Born in Nineveh, Indiana Died New York, New York In 1883 Chase was involved in the organization of an exhibition to help raise funds for a pedestal for the Statute of Liberty. The exhibition featured loans of three works by Manet and urban scenes by the Italian Impressionist Giuseppe de Nittis. Both artists influenced Chase's Impressionistic style that gave rise to a series of New York park scenes. It is also thought that he was influenced by John Singer Sargent's In the Luxembourg Gardens (1879) which was exhibited in New York at this time. Indeed, Chase had met Sargent in Europe in 1881, the two men becoming lifelong friends with Sargent painting Chase's portrait in 1902. On another European trip in 1885, Chase met James McNeill Whistler in London. While Whistler had a reputation for being difficult, the two artists got along famously and agreed to paint one another's portrait. Eventually, however, Whistler's moods began to grate with Chase who wrote home stating "I really begin to feel that I never will get away from here". For his part, Whistler criticized Chase's finished portrait and, according to Hirshler, "complained about Chase for the rest of his life". While no record exists of Whistler's portrait of Chase; Chase's portrait of Whistler remains a well-known piece in his oeuvre. In 1887 Chase married Alice Gerson, the daughter of the manager of a lithography company. Though some fifteen years his junior (Chase was 37), he had known Alice for some time through her family's devotion to the arts. The pair, who would enjoy a happy marriage with Alice in full support of her husband's career, settled initially in Brooklyn...

Corneille was born in Liège, Belgium, although his parents were Dutch and moved back to the Netherlands when he was 12. He studied art at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He was one of the founders of the REFLEX movement in 1948 and in 1949 he was also one of the founders of the COBRA movement, which has had great influence on Scandinavian art. He was active within the group from the beginning, not only painting but also publishing poetry in the Cobra magazine. He was a cofounder of the Experimentele Groep in Holland [nl]. Corneille was inspired by the drawings of children, and believed in the importance of approaching children with art that connects with their experience. When he heard during a Cobra Museum visit in the nineties that there was an “Art Lending for Children” he talked with the founder Roby Bellemans and asked him to send more information to his home in Paris about this project. He decided to promote the initiative. He started with a support list and persuaded other artists such as Shinkichi Tajiri...
