About the Item

This original limited edition graphic art lithographic poster entitled "Carousel Animals" was created by David Lance Goines in 1984 in his Berkeley studio, as #108 in his series of graphic art posters. It depicts a young girl in a dress and bonnet, holding a group of flowers up to two beautiful carousel horses in the background. The scene was inspired by the Berkeley, California carousel. The poster was commissioned by Tobin Fraley Studios of Oakland, California, who specialized in carousel and carousel animal restoration. This original limited edition poster was printed in 13 colors. It measures 24" high x 17.75" wide. The poster is in excellent condition. David Lance Goines (1945-) is an American graphic artist, calligrapher, typographer, printing entrepreneur, and author. His work is held by many museums and institutions, including: The Smithsonian Institution's American Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Louvre in Paris and The Library of Congress. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, Goines started his career as a printer’s apprentice. He soon founded the Saint Hieronymous Press in Berkeley, where he still works. He has created many advertising posters, but as a political activist, he has also designed posters in support of social causes and organizations. Goines is involved in all phases of the production of his graphic arts, from the design and production of ink colors to the final printing process. Goines’s illustrative graphic approach incorporates some of the features of the famous 19th and early 20th century graphic artists, with his own unique and instantly recognizable style.

    This is a hand-colored folio sized lithograph entitled "Calothorax Yarrelli", Yarrell's Wood-star Hummingbirds by John Gould, published in his "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds", published in London in 1850. The print, which was drawn by Gould and Henry Richter and lithographed by Hullmandel and Walton, depicts three green, white, grey, and a little blue colored hummingbirds amid green cactus plants with white and pink colored flowers. The hummingbirds are augmented by gum-arabic paint, which gives them an iridescent appearance in areas in which it is used.
