Gregory D. Steele
'Boats at Camdon' giclee print on canvas after 1998 oil

2008

About the Item

Art: 16 1/8 x 19 7/8 Frame: 26 1/4 x 30 Giclee print on canvas after 1998 oil on board, signed in ink lower right. From a tranquil northern lake to the scenic hills of southwestern Wisconsin to a rising storm over an Iowa farm, Gregory Steele uses color and detail (or even lack of detail) to create oil paintings with a depth that pulls you into the paintings. They make you feel as though you can walk through the painting to see what is on the other side of the hill or beyond the bend of the road. IMAGERY: Gregory is a Midwesterner who believes the Midwest offers a rich assortment of landscapes and people that deserve to be painted. His paintings often stir a memory of a place or an event in the life of the viewer. HISTORY: Greg was born and raised in a small western Illinois town twelve miles from the Mississippi River. He has lived in view of the river in Iowa since 1969. The river and the landscape near the river continues to be a major influence on his art and his desire to create it. He became a professional artist at the age of 18 as a cartoonist, selling cartoons and political cartoons to newspapers in northwestern Illinois. From 1696 to 1981 he worked for advertising agencies and General Electric as an illustrator and designer. In 1981 he became a freelance illustrator doing illustrations in various styles for companies such as John Deere, Nissan, Yamaha, BMW, Proctor and Gamble, Miller, etc. In 1992 he began dropping commercial clients to devote more time to his drive to create paintings. Through the years he has been experimenting with various styles of art. In the 60's and 70's he was doing nonobjective and abstract paintings in oil or colored inks, 4í x 5í heads in acrylic, and silk-screens on aluminum. Landscape though has always been the image he has drifted back to. Through all of the styles he has used, his main objective has been to create a four dimensional image on a two dimensional plain. By Julia Taylor
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
Milwaukee's iconic spots are captured in watercolor and available as hand-embellished giclée. They are printed on archival quality watercolor paper and specially hand embellished so each giclée is a unique mixed media piece of artwork. The artist Julia Taylor added special original touches to each print in 'The Milwaukee Series 2020' Art: 22" x 21" Growing up in a small farming community in Indiana, I learned to draw early in life. I earned spending money by sketching portraits at county fairs and illustrations in weekly papers. Art teachers in high school and college taught me ways to master drawing fluidly from life. In college, my small stained glass...

  • 'Morph Dog Series: Celebration' signed artist's proof I/XXV giclée print
    By David Barnett
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
‘Celebration’ is an artist’s proof giclée print, signed and dated by the artist in the lower right. This piece is a part of Barnett’s ‘Morph Dog Series,’ so named for his use of a “morph dog”—a dog-shaped foam sculpture that transforms into a cube when turned inside out—to paint. Against a muted horizon, multicolored rings ignite the sky like fireworks as confetti cascades to the bottom of the frame; rows of morph dogs further ornament the display in red and blue. Giclée print on watercolor paper AP I/XXV 48 x 36 in, print 57.5 x 46.75 in, frame Signed and dated in lower right "AP I/XXV" in lower left Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting and housed in a gold finish wood moulding. David Barnett, an artist, collector, appraiser and gallerist has been passionate about art from the early age of five. David’s career as an art dealer began at age nineteen when, as a fine arts student, he sponsored an exhibition of work by fellow student artists. In 1966, he opened his first gallery in a converted basement apartment at Wisconsin Avenue and 21st Street. In 1985 David moved his gallery from Wisconsin Avenue into the Old Button Mansion on State Street and has been active ever since. David’s talents for recognizing undervalued artists and for meeting the needs of art lovers, art collectors and artists have created a vibrant, flourishing gallery and collection of over 6,000 works of art. David was born and raised in Wisconsin. He has been painting in watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels as well as fine art photography. David has more than 10 different series he has developed over the years.
