His work, whether painted on canvas or on walls, is characterized by a dynamic energy and explosive use of color. Dondi became associated with a group of legendary artists working in the East Village, including Futura, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His canvas works reiterated the lettering, symbolic icons, and stick figures that were his signature marks on the streets, while his later work from the 1990s included collages that juxtaposed pencil drawings with blueprints of the subway system—which had previously served as his canvas. Futura: Futura 2000 is a contemporary American graffiti artist. Over the course of his career, he transitioned from making New York-based subway graffiti in the early 1970s, to exhibiting at Fun Gallery in the 1980s alongside major artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Kenny Scharf. He went on to collaborate with the punk band The Clash, designing their album art and performing live graffiti during their concerts. Today, McGurr’s work can be found in the collections of the Museo de Arte Moderna di Bologna, the Musée de Vire in France, and the Museum of the City of New York. Lee Quinones: Lee Quinones is an American-Puerto Rican artist known for the graffiti he made on New York subway cars during the 1970s and 1980s. Quinones addressed political and cultural issues through his graffiti, with quotes such as “Earth is Hell, Heaven is Life” and “Stop the Bomb.” The artist began tagging subway cars in 1974, and by 1976 he was already well known in a community which included Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. By the mid-1980s, he had begun working on canvas and exhibiting his work in galleries. He has gone on to collaborate on graphics for clothing brands such as Supreme and Adidas. CRASH: CRASH is an American graffiti artist best known for his murals and silk screen prints inspired by the Pop Art movement. As in the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, CRASH’s energetic, colorful designs allude to celebrity and comic book culture in an attempt to make his work more accessible to a mass audience, as seen in Dear Prudence(1989) and The Art of Mickey Mouse (2004). In 1984, the artist collaborated with Keith Haring on a series of murals commissioned by Figuration Libre and British American Tobacco. Today, his works are held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others. DAZE: Chris “DAZE” Ellis is an American graffiti artist known as one of the pioneers of the street-art movement. DAZE got his start writing graffiti on New York City subway cars in the mid-1970s, while he was a student at the High School of Art & Design. In 1981, his work was featured in the Mudd Club group exhibition Beyond Words, alongside works from Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. His work has been acquired by the Brooklyn Museum, the Groninger Museum, the Ludwig Museum in Aachen, Germany, the Museum of the City of New York, and New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Lady Pink: Lady Pink, (Ecuadorean, b.1964), is a New York-based Graffiti artist. Lady Pink attended the High School of Art & Design. From 1979 to 1985, she worked as a Graffiti artist in New York, especially in the subway system. She was featured in the influential 1983 film Wild Style, which featured many of the period’s important Graffiti artists. When she was 21, Lady Pink had her first solo exhibition at Philadelphia’s Moore College of Art. Lady Pink’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Zephyr: Zephyr is a graffiti artist, lecturer, and author from New York City. Zephyr began his art career in 1977, painting his Zephyr moniker on subway cars. He was part of the first wave of graffiti artists to make the transition to galleries, collectors, and commercial work. In 1982 he was part of the original group of artists to form the FUN Gallery in Greenwich Village, New York, which at the time also included such art icons as Futura 2000, Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. William (Bill) van Straaten (1937-2013) founded van Straaten Gallery in Chicago in 1969, a contemporary art gallery with an international reputation. He served as president of the Chicago Art Dealers Association. He ran the gallery at 646 North Michigan Avenue for 33 years until 2002. In 2003, van Straaten moved his operations to Steamboat Springs, Colorado establishing Riverhouse Editions, a fine art publisher. In 2008, van Straaten moved to Denver and acquired the Sandy Carson Gallery on Santa Fe Drive, which operated as the van Straaten Gallery for five final years before closing in 2012.
