About the Item

Emilio Grau Sala Original Handsigned Lithograph Dimensions: 76 x 54 cm Edition: HC XXI/XXX HandSigned and Numbered Ecole de Paris au seuil de la mutation des Arts Sentiers Editions Emilio Grau Sala was one of the great painters of the “Ecole de Paris” and of the second mid twenty century. Emilio Grau-Sala, Spanish (1911 - 1975) A School of Paris painter who never abandoned lyrical figurative and landscape subjects, Emilio Grau-Sala was born in Barcelona and studied at the School of Fine Arts in his native town. Beginning his public career in 1929, he moved to Paris in 1932 and exhibited at the Salon du Printemps. His lively and graceful street scenes, circus rings and interiors accorded well with current sensibilities in the Parisian art center, and Grau-Sala quickly gained an international reputation. In 1937 he was awarded a Carnegie prize in Pittsburgh, and his regular exhibitions in the United States made him as sought-after overseas as he was in Europe. In addition to his work as a painter, Grau-Sala was also recognized as an important illustrator, decorator, and pastel painter, illustrating numerous fine editions of volumes by authors such as Flaubert, Baudelaire, and Maupassant. Leisure, entertainment, and elegant domesticity are Grau Sala’s most frequently treated themes: people conversing at the racetrack or circus, splendid parties, or domestic scenes in well-appointed interiors. He depicted his pleasant scenes with an intense, broken color and sparkling, impastic surface heighten the joyous quality so typical of his work.

It was boldly inscribed in black marker to Peter by Cindy Sherman. Publisher: Hamptons International Film Festival Cindy Sherman Biography: Born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Cindy Sherman lives and works in New York NY. Her ground-breaking photographs have interrogated themes around representation and identity in contemporary media for over four decades. Coming to prominence in the late 1970s with the Pictures Generation group alongside artists such as Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Louise Lawler, Sherman studied art at Buffalo State College in 1972 where she turned her attention to photography. In 1977, shortly after moving to New York, Sherman began her critically acclaimed Untitled Film Stills. A suite of 69 black and white portraits, Untitled Film Stills sees Sherman impersonate a myriad of stereotypical female characters and caricatures inspired by Hollywood pictures, film noir, and B movies. Using a range of costumes, props and backdrops to manipulate her own appearance and to create photographs resembling promotional film images, the series explores the tension between artifice and identity in consumer culture which has preoccupied the artist’s practice ever since. Sherman continued to channel and reconstruct familiar personas known to the collective psyche, often in unsettling ways. In 1981, the artist created her Centerfolds, a series of photographic double spreads inspired by men’s erotic...
