SWEETGRASS CARRIERS is a hand drawn, limited edition lithograph(not a photo reproduction or digital print) by the renowned American artist JONATHAN GREEN printed in 17 colors using hand lithography techniques on heavyweight archival Arches paper, 100% acid free. SWEETGRASS CARRIERS depicts a rural South Carolina Lowcountry landscape scene featuring a standing male figure wearing a straw sunhat, white shirt and rugged blue denim overalls accompanied by three women clothed in colorful orange, blue and red bell shaped dresses all carrying bundles of freshly harvested sweetgrass. The expansive field of golden yellow, orange, and green blades of grass is backed by a horizon line of deep blue water and distant green trees enlivened by white clouds sweeping across a clear blue sky. Truly an impressive South Carolina Lowcountry Gullah landscape! Impressive size - Large horizontal format, unframed, pencil signed and numbered by Jonathan Green, handmade lithograph, fine impression, publishers chop mark embossed on lower margin, Print documentation/ COA will be provided Print size - 33.5 x 42.5 inches Image size - 27 x 36.5 inches Edition size - 95, plus proofs Year published - 1999 Sweetgrass grows in the moist, sandy soils near oceans and marshes. It is harvested in the spring and summer by "pullers" who slip it from its roots and place it in the sun to dry. Sweetgrass baskets are the generations-old African weaving craft worked by plantation slave families. The tradition remains strong and contemporary Lowcountry baskets still resemble the West African crafts, and are prized collectibles. The weavers, many working out of their roadside stands, are a cultural attraction. Basket making was once common along the coast from southern North Carolina to northern Florida, anywhere slaves worked and grew rice. Today, the craft is primarily concentrated in South Carolina's Lowcountry, especially in downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant. Painter and printmaker Jonathan Green is considered one of the most important contemporary painters of the Southern experience. The artwork of Green is heavily influenced by his Gullah heritage with vividly colored paintings and prints documenting everyday chores, in addition to celebrating Gullah life’s rites of passage. By returning his art to his childhood upbringing, Green has created an autobiographical body of work in addition to documenting a vanishing way of life. Jonathan Green's artwork has been exhibited across the United States and internationally, and is included in the permanent collections of several major museums. Artist statement - "I am drawn to rural environments that afford a sense of space and silence and an opportunity to unobtrusively observe daily functions of others as we all pursue life's mission of work, love and belonging.… It is the small, but critical tasks of daily life that I find most stimulating and reflective of the quality of essential, personal, community, and social values."

  • GOING TO CHURCH Signed Lithograph, Southern Landscape, African American Heritage
    By William Tolliver
    Located in Union City, NJ
GOING TO CHURCH was the very first limited edition print created by the self-taught African American artist William Tolliver (b.1951-2000) in 1987. GOING TO CHURCH is an original hand drawn lithograph (not a photo reproduction or digital print) printed on archival printmaking paper 100% acid free, using hand lithography techniques. William Tolliver 's recognizable artistic style freely combines the colors of Chagall with the solid compositional principles of Cezanne and the mood and forms reminiscent of Modigliani and Picasso. GOING TO CHURCH depicts a Southern Landscape with a group of black country folk - three females clothed in long dresses, and two youths wearing blue jeans, all walking on their way to religious services. The black textured drawing background defines the composition's frame and outlines the rural landscape, trees, and sky with the procession of human figures in the foreground; a rainbow of multicolors creating a vibrant, almost stained-glass visual effect . GOING TO CHURCH is an impressive large horizontal landscape...

Publisher: Hamptons International Film Festival Cindy Sherman Biography: Born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Cindy Sherman lives and works in New York NY. Her ground-breaking photographs have interrogated themes around representation and identity in contemporary media for over four decades. Coming to prominence in the late 1970s with the Pictures Generation group alongside artists such as Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Louise Lawler, Sherman studied art at Buffalo State College in 1972 where she turned her attention to photography. In 1977, shortly after moving to New York, Sherman began her critically acclaimed Untitled Film Stills. A suite of 69 black and white portraits, Untitled Film Stills sees Sherman impersonate a myriad of stereotypical female characters and caricatures inspired by Hollywood pictures, film noir, and B movies. Using a range of costumes, props and backdrops to manipulate her own appearance and to create photographs resembling promotional film images, the series explores the tension between artifice and identity in consumer culture which has preoccupied the artist’s practice ever since. Sherman continued to channel and reconstruct familiar personas known to the collective psyche, often in unsettling ways. In 1981, the artist created her Centerfolds, a series of photographic double spreads inspired by men’s erotic...
