This print features the film icon Marilyn Monroe, who has been a popular subject for Peter Blake as well as other Pop Artists, most notably Andy Warhol. “Contemporary art has always been so serious, but I have managed to keep the playful, surrealist thing going”- Peter Blake The image portrays Monroe with her signature smile, her gaze addresses the viewer directly. Blake accentuated Marilyn's red lips and the background while keeping her face and hair silver matte, thus he emphasized her status as a sex symbol. His paintings included imagery from advertisements, music hall entertainment, and wrestlers, often including collaged elements. “Contemporary art has always been so serious, but I have managed to keep the playful, surrealist thing going.” -Peter Blake Sir Peter Blake is perhaps the most recognized and highly regarded artist of the British Pop Art movement. He is a painter, sculptor, draughtsman and printmaker. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1956, Blake has appropriated pop culture icons and advertising imagery to create sincere homage to the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Elvis Presley and professional wrestlers. In 1967 he designed the album cover of the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in his distinctive style of collage. Blake has continued to be associated with the music world by designing album covers. His paintings have been on exhibited at the Tate Liverpool, the Sir Peter Blake Music Art Gallery in Leeds, and the Holburne Museum in Bath. The artist continues to live and work in England.
