A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes; this series - and we have many in this series - takes a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view.
The Ilyushin Il-2 Stormovik was an armoured ground attack aircraft designed to destroy tanks from tree-top height. Known as the “flying tank”, in total some 36,000 single-engine Stormoviks were built – the greatest number of any military aircraft in history. The Stormovik was one of the Soviet Union’s most important aircraft of World War 2; so important, in fact, that in an angry letter to armament factories in 1941 Stalin emphasised how vital the Il-2 was to the war effort: “Our Red Army now needs Il-2 aircraft like the air it breathes, like the bread it eats,” he wrote.
The Stormovik's cockpit and engine was plated in thick steel plate rather than aluminium. This armour offered protection to the pilot during the aircraft’s low, slow attack runs at the front line of the battlefield. The Sturmovik would have flown barely 20 metres above the ground – firing its machine guns and cannons or dropping bombs and rockets.
One tactic military strategists developed for the aircraft was the “circle of death” where a group of Sturmoviks would encircle a target at a safe altitude. On a command, each plane in succession would peel away and dive towards the ground to attack, before returning to the circle. The procedure continued until the target was destroyed or ammunition exhausted.

The Junkers Ju 52/3m (nicknamed Tante Ju ("Aunt Ju") and Iron Annie) was a transport aircraft that was designed and manufactured by German aviation company Junkers. Development of the Ju 52 commenced during 1930, headed by German aeronautical engineer Ernst Zindel. Its maiden flight was on 13 October 1930. Following the rise of Nazi Germany, thousands of Ju 52s were procured as a staple military transport of the nation. The Ju 52 was in production between 1931 and 1952. In a civilian role, it flew with over 12 airlines, including Swissair and Deutsche Luft Hansa, as both a passenger carrier and a freight hauler. In a military role, large numbers flew with the Luftwaffe, being deployed on virtually all fronts of the Second World War as a troop and cargo transport; it was also briefly used as a medium bomber.
