Wladimir Flem
WWII Original poster for European Prosperity - European Recovery Program

Circa 1947

About the Item

Original poster created by Wladimir Flem. Wladimir Flem was born in 1910 and was primarily inspired creatively by the 1930s. The period of the 1930s was characterized by the conflict between many political ideologies, including Marxist socialism, capitalist democracy and the totalitarianism of communism and fascism. Surrealism continued to dominate in Europe and had an international influence. Artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera in Mexico worked to integrate the ideas of Surrealism with their radical political ideologies, developing a new type of magic realism. The European Recovery Program (ERP), later known as the Marshall Plan, was a U.S.-sponsored program designed to rehabilitate European economies after World War II. German companies that received ERP funds had to repay the German government, which then loaned the money to other companies. This process continues today through the government bank KfW, which finances several programs - the "ERP programs" - from the special assets of the ERP. The ERP was a generous proposal to help Europeans get back on their feet by providing them with means for recovery. One of the conditions of this financial assistance was that the European governments themselves take the first steps toward economic collaboration. The Marshall Plan was strongly identified with American anti-communist foreign policy (support for the "free world" as a buffer to the spread of communism), and this aspect was welcomed by Marshall Plan skeptics in the United States. By Roger Bezombes
    Located in PARIS, FR
In the early 1980s, Air France commissioned Roger Bezombes, famous for his sculptures and paintings, to create original artworks capturing Air France’s spirit. He produced a series of 16 colorful photo collages that were printed at Atelier Mourlot. These graphic works were executed using lithography, typography, and embossing with metallic inks. These posters were revolutionary. Inspired by surrealism, they depict concepts rather than destinations and evoke the mysteries and joys of air travel. Far ahead of their time, they were only released by Air France and exhibited for the first time at the Pompidou Museum of Modern Art ten years after...
