Delphine Grandvaux
"Variations", Hand-Knitted Metallic Airy Abstract Black Golden Mesh Sculpture

2022

About the Item

"Variations" is a metallic airy sculpture entirely hand-knitted by its creator Delphine Grandvaux from an iron wire coated in black and another one coated in golden. Being composed of 23 cells which are grouped into 7 parts, this artwork plays on the explosion of volumes. Each cell contains an interior volume. This mural artwork is simply to be installed with one or two small nails per part. The 7 parts are suggested to be installed in such a way that the whole work would be dense in the middle and vaporous around the edges. Nevertheless, its art-collector has the total freedom to arrange the 7 parts according to her/his own space. The final dimensions of this artwork can vary since they will be defined by the way that its art-collector arrange the seven parts. The diameters of the cells vary from 3.5 inches to 7.5 inches, through 3.5 inches, 3.9 inches, 5.1 inches and 5.5 inches, and their depth measures circa 1.6 inches. Delphine Grandvaux is a French sculptor. Motivated by her desire to create light and airy artworks, she developed a unique artistic approach, based on a similar technique of mesh from metal wire as Ruth Asawa, although in a more dynamic way. In the mesh works of Delphine Grandvaux, the metallic threads, sometimes associated with other light materials like wood, wool, etc., seem to be tamed by the power of her technique and by her freedom of imagination. They transform themselves under the hands of the artist into voluminous organic and dynamic forms, fine and refined, with fluid movements inside as well as outside the work. Playing with light and shadow, the transparent or semi-transparent forms created by the artist are truly evocative of poetry, delicacy and elegance.
