About the Item
This abstract metal sculpture by Howard Lewis is made from a solid bar of recycled steel. It has been cut, shaped, polished and "carved" with abrasives and intense heat revealing a variety of textures both on the surface and the interior. Since it's made from solid steel it is heavy for its size and has a commanding presence. The two wood bases are made from reclaimed old wood that reflect the imperfections that come with age.
Weight 28lbs
Size of steel cylinder part of sculpture has a diameter of approximately 2.5 inches x height 23.5 inches
Size of sculpture from base to top 27.5 inches
Diameter of bottom base is 10 inches
The artist mark is on the underside of the steel part of the sculpture and shown in the photographs. The date is marked as '12 indicating 2012. Documentation can be provided by the artist.
"I’m fascinated by archeology and geologic time spans so I try to create sculpture that reflects not only our current time and emotions, but also can convey a sense of time on a grander scale. I do this by adding another dimension that alludes to slow decay or growth. The very act of manipulating steel is primitive and historical; using heat to cut, bend and fuse is thousands of years old. And I sense that primal element when I’m working. Inspired by objects that have endured natural forces over eons such as dinosaur bones, volcanic rock and stone-age tools I’m challenged to shape the metal into something that connotes powerful forces, inspires reflection and encourages one to reach out and touch."

Howard Lewis
Lewis started photographing when he was a teenager and continued through film school. He went on to work as an advertising and editorial photographer where he photographed for international clients like Taylor Wines and General Foods. Lewis’ fine art photographs have been in several museum exhibitions including the Michener and Dow museums as well as in major corporate collections. Even while he did commercial assignments, Lewis always photographed for himself as an expression of a specific vision. He mostly photographed in black and white, and studied with O Winston Link, Joyce Tenneson and many others. Lewis developed an interest in creating images related to science and innovation. He was fortunate to meet prolific inventor and scientist Dr. Edwin Land (CEO and Founder of Polaroid) which furthered his passion for integrating science into his photographs. Polaroid materials became part of his way of sketching photographically. Eventually, he left the commercial business and photographed extensively for self-expression. He ventured into parallel initiatives such as new product development (he holds three patents) and creating welded metal sculpture. All these activities influenced his photographs, especially sculpting which became immensely important to his growth in creating his still life images. Lewis’ photographs have been exhibited in galleries and cultural centers internationally, including the Gladstone Regional Museum and Gallery in Queensland, Australia, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa; the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania; the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science in Midland, Michigan; the New York Center for Photographic Arts; the Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon; the Courtyard Gallery in Connecticut; and the Grey & Gove Gallery in New York City.

- "Untitled" Sidney Gordin, Abstract Metal Steel SculptureBy Sidney GordinLocated in New York, NYSidney Gordin Untitled, 1958 Incised with initials Welded Steel 15 x 10 1/2 x 6 inches Provenance: Eric Firestone Gallery, New York On October 24, 1918, Sidney Gordin was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He spent his early years in Shanghai, China. At the age of four, he moved with his family to New York. Gordin’s nephew, Eliot Nemzer recalls that when Gordin was a child he attended “a dinner party with his parents. Someone showed him a book of pictures that when thumbed through quickly made the image appear to move. This person then gave him a wad of blank papers and something to write with. Sid created a similar type of moving image with his materials. All the adults at the party became quite excited [and] praised his efforts. Sid told me he thought this was a pivotal experience in guiding him towards his vocation.” During his formative years at Brooklyn Technical High School, he briefly contemplated the idea of becoming an architect; yet, by the time he enrolled at Cooper Union, he was determined to become a professional artist. There, he studied under Morris Kantor (1896-1974) and Leo Katz...Category
