Jolanta Banaszkiewicz
Refleksy (Reflexes), Mid-Century Wool Tapestry, Abstract Textile Wall Sculpture

1973

About the Item

Refleksy (Reflexes), flax (linen) and wool, 50" x 48" x 2", 1973. This warm, vivid Mid-Century tapestry, Refleksy (1973) is by Polish textile artist, Jolanta Banaszkiewicz (b. 1926) The title, Refleksy, translates in English to Reflexes. "In Refleksy (1973), the artist has skillfully combined vibrant colors with darker hues. The resulting weaving is bold from a distance, more nuanced and refined in texture on closer inspection. A reviewer of Banaszkiewicz's work in New Concepts in Tapestries from Poland, at the Jacques Baruch Gallery, Chicago, Illinois in 1972 noted the contrast between her pared-down technique and the complexity of the result. 'A series of overlapping strips in closely shifting colors...' by Banaszkiewicz, 'is rather simple in its weaving techniques,' Robert H. Glauber wrote. 'But the fallout of color, light and shadow is arresting.' " (Excerpt from the browngrotta arts catalog: Advocates for Art: Polish and Czech Fiber Artists from the Anne and Jacques Baruch Collection) Banaszkiewicz's work has been featured in a wide range of international exhibitions including the 1st and 2nd International Triennials of Tapestry in Lodz, Poland, Convergence 76 at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, PA and an exhibition of Polish Contemporary Art that traveled to Manchester, England; Moscow, Russia; Essen, Germany and Bucharest, Romania.
