Steven Heinemann
Afterlife No 3 - blue, black, nature inspired, elongated, ceramic vessel

2020

About the Item

In this new piece by the celebrated Canadian ceramicist Steven Heinemann the viewer is immediately drawn to the beautiful deep blue of the bowl’s interior. The exterior of this oval-shaped bowl has a smooth, matte black finish, a perfect contrast to its textured interior. In his studio in a converted barn in Cookstown, Ontario Heinemann creates unique organic-shaped vessels that re-define the limits of ceramic art. “While you might say the bowl has this inherent modesty, it also offers a kind of theatre in which space can be activated, or some event takes place. In my case that seems to be tied to phenomena, pattern, somewhere between organic growth and geologic event.” Steven Heinemann He earned an MFA from Alfred University, NY in 1983, and has taught in Canada and the US. Heinemann has exhibited continuously since his first solo exhibition at the Ontario Crafts Council in 1982. Heinemann's work is held in museums the world over. He has received many national and international awards including the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada’s highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft.

The natural world inspires the beautiful organic forms of artist Jana Osterman. This deep blue patinated winterstone sculpture suggests the shape and movement of tree roots.
