Mother & Child, Mid-Century Figural Brutalist Bronze Sculpture by Curt Beckmann Rare and evocative mid-century figural bronze sculpture of mother and fleeing young child by Curt Beckmann (German, 1901-1970). 1965 2/7. It measures 15" high by 15" wide and 11" deep. It sits on black granite base that is .75" high x 11.25" deep x 15.50 wide. Curt Beckmann, sculptor and draughtsman, studied at the Academy of Art in Duesseldorf with Hubert Netzer and Richard Langner. After stays in Italy and Paris he went to Hamburg where he remained until 1950 when he returned to Duesseldorf. He was a member of the Rheinische secession, in The Young Rhineland, the artist Malkasten, the Westdeutsche Künstlerbund and the German Artist Union [1]. After the war, Curt Beckmann lived for some time in a studio in Alsterdorf, where he worked in close contact with the family of play write Wolfgang Borchert whom named the protagonist of his play The Man Outside after Beckmann. In Duesseldorf and in Hamburg he was associated with Hermann Blumenthal, Kurt Lehmann and Gerhard Marcks. He is represented in numerous public galleries including the National Gallery in Berlin. Curt Beckmann was married twice and had six children. His second wife, was the painter Babette Beckmann from Hamburg.
