Jean-Robert Drouillard
Jeune sauveur (aussi appelé J.J.)

2013

About the Item

Born in 1970 in Chatham, Ontario, Jean-Robert Drouillard lives and works in Québec City. Following studies in literature and creative writing, he took up sculpture. In 2000, he obtained a diploma from the École-atelier de sculpture de Québec (Maison des métiers d'art). Whether life-sized or small format, his sculptures are always highly realistic. The self-portrait or "self-representation" is at the centre of his work. He or members of his family become models against a backdrop of fables and legends, to which he adds a touch of humour. His art is an attempt to blur the boundaries between art and artisanship, claiming a lineage from traditional sculpture in his choice of raw materials and techniques. Since 2004, Drouillard has taught sculpture in wood, metal and concrete at the Maison des métiers d'art de Québec. He was also involved for several years at L'Oeil de Poisson, a showcase in Québec City for contemporary art and practices that cross disciplinary boundaries. In 2002, he founded La Coop Le Bloc 5, a cooperative of visual arts artisans, with the artists Marc-Antoine and Nathalie Côte, Ludovic Boney and Kathy Ouellette. His work can be found in several public and private collections throughout Canada.

  • Whale Fall
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
In this fully collaborative work, artists Crombach and Stern explore subject matter derived from the problematic and mythologized human relationship to the natural world. When the body of a whale sinks to the abyssal plain and forms an ecosystem, this is called a whale fall. Whale Fall (2019) consists of glazed porcelain assemblages and furniture carved into skeletal forms. Clusters of partially recognizable porcelain objects allude to both the decaying flesh of a whale and Baroque still-life painting. Whale Fall oscillates between shipwreck and whale carcass. Illuminated from within, it is an otherworldly creature in its own right; a fleshy thing in a moment of arrested decay. Nurielle Stern...

  • Silhouette emballée et contaminée (Hélène)
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
Les couleurs de la terre is the first joint exhibition by artist duo Hélène et son mari, composed of ceramist Hélène Chouinard and multidisciplinary artist Jean-Robert Drouillard. Conceived as an expression of a decade of dialoguing creative practices, the exhibition explores the formation and transmission of artisanal knowledge by presenting finely-crafted objects in a contemporary light. Hélène Chouinard’s works extend from her recent material research on clay colouring techniques. She methodically mixes two to three base pigments in various proportions, adding these directly to the clay to create a desired tone. Once molded and baked, this tone permeates the resulting object, not just its surface. Fascinated by the formal range of vessels from the mundane to the sophisticated, Chouinard reproduces everyday glass bottles by molding them in coloured porcelain. Each bottle bears...
