(This piece is part of the exhibition titled 'WORK' on LADIES' ROOM)
Kuo’s sculptural functional wares are made with the labor-intensive Nerikomi technique by which porcelain clay is stained, extruded, assembled into a large patterned block, and sliced. The cross-sections reveal intricate double-sided images in clay, ready to be molded into vessels that explore pattern, color, translucency, and optical illusion.

Karen Kuo (b.1993, USA) is a Taiwanese-American artist whose paintings explore the ephemera of light and color in architectural and imagined spaces. Her work is driven by an eagerness to align inner spiritual life with the sublimity of nature. Kuo’s dirt sphere collection is the result of meditation sessions whereby she sources dirt locally, then sifts, hand shapes, and polishes them into smooth shiny palm-sized globes. Her observations of natural phenomena translates into drawings, paintings, and sculptures that dwell upon hidden dimensions and fantasy worlds. Karen lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

WORK features 10 artists whose laborious methodologies demonstrate an indisputable meticulousness and care for their media. Selected for their quasi-obsessive dedication to their practice, each of the artists in WORK assiduously and repeatedly cut, draw, carve, sculpt, stitch, and weave their materials into complex configurations. - BIOGRAPHY - Felice Grodin is a visual artist based in Miami Beach, FL.
