Masayuki Nagare
Bachi

1984

About the Item

Masayuki Nagare’s first bachi was created in 1971. The bachi is one of the artist’s most significant and monumental sculptural forms. The form was inspired by the pick used to play the traditional Japanese Shamisen lute, instilling the work with great ritualistic significance. For Nagare, the bachi is interwoven with his own historical connection to the samurai tradition; the form epitomizes a concept of beauty mirrored in Sori sword-smithing technique, using subtle, curvilinear lines and highlighting the sword as an object of elegant beauty, rather than one of abject violence. Pointed up to the sky, bachi represents harmony and unity, and reflects the artist’s shinogi technique, where two planes meet and create a sharp edge to evoke the inner power of the sculpture.
