This is a high quality handmade Miniature or travelling wood chess set game of 32 pieces in its own lidded pokerwork decorated box, which we date to the English Edwardian period, circa 1900. This piece is all handmade. The chess set is complete with 32 wood chess pieces. The box is also handmade of wood, opening up to make a pokerwork chess board with further pokerwork design to the sides. All the pieces are hand carved, probably from boxwood with the black ones stained . The box has metal hinges and a brass fastener to keep the lid securely closed, with the pieces inside. This is a good and complete English handmade wood "weighted" chess set game of 32 pieces, in its original box with a sliding lid, made by John Jaques of London and dating to the mid 20th century period. The chess pieces are made of turned and carved varnished wood. The bases of ALL pieces are weighted with metal pieces and the bases have a green felt/paper cover. Weighted sets like this one have a much nicer "feel" when playing. The pieces in the set are in the Staunton style. Sizes: Kings: 70mm ( ~ 2.75 inches); Pawns: ~45mm (~1.7 inches) The set comes complete with its original wood storage box, having a sliding lid and complete with a paper makers sticker to the lid.
