Jean Nison Ceramic Tiled Console Shelf by Weiss & Basser
By Weiss & Basser, Jean Nison, Hans Weiss, William Basser
Located in Hanover, MA
Organically shaped wall-mounted floating console table shelf in walnut trim and set with ~130 individual art tiles created by ceramicist Jean Nison (1922-2015). This work was custom made for the 90 Riverside Drive apartment of Jacques and Alina Roisen, circa 1959 together with an architectural sideboard-buffet and a curved wall with floating cabinets which we have listed separately. (ref: LU886622968512 and LU886622682472) and are also decorated with tile murals by Jean Nison. Her work was exhibited at Gumps, Helena Rubinstein and America House. To obtain commissions she would go around to the offices of architects and decorators and leave samples of her work. It was how Raymond Loewy Associates commissioned her to do a tile wall for the chairman's office in Lever House. It is likely that is how she came to the notice of Hans Weiss...
