Antique Solid Silver Aesthetic Style Beaker/Cup, John Adlwinckle & James Slater
By John Aldwinckle & James Slater
Located in London, GB
We are delighted to offer this beautiful example of Victorian aesthetic style silver, made in the form of a beaker/cup by John Adlwinckle & James Slater in London, 1881. The Aesthetic Movement, a precursor to the Arts and Crafts Movement was a decorative art style c1870-1900. Regarding this style contextually to silver, the designs were strongly influenced by Japanese themes of nature and wildlife with silverware being hand engraved with fine, minimalistic lines portraying birds, leaves and flowers. One can imagine how meticulous & skilled the engraver would have been in order to fully decorate a plain cylindrical beaker without a single slip of the hand. This beaker remains in exemplary condition with very crisp and almost sharp to the touch engravings. The interior is fully gilt which wonderfully contrasts the exterior whilst providing some protection from the silver tarnishing. The central cartouche has been engraved with a presentation message. Due to its versatile form and size, in the modern-day such silverware can have many creative uses. From drinking your favourite beverage to displaying some flowers as a small vase, we recommend getting creative to use silverware...
