Pierre Chapo Daybeds

French, 1927-1987

Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.

Pierre Chapo L07 Extendable Daybed, Oak, Mid-Century Modern, France, 1963
By Pierre Chapo
Located in Antwerp, BE
Pierre Chapo; L07; Extendable daybed; bench; side table; coffee table; Wood; Oak; France; 1963; Mid-Century Modern; Charlotte Perriand; Jean Prouvé; French Design; What makes this ingenious item so exceptional is that it offers various possibilities to complement your interior: it can be used as a daybed, a bench or even a coffee table. The extendable feature not only provides the option of using the item in different ways but also gives it a different look. It's a fine example of Chapo's sophisticated designs. This daybed, known as model L07, is made of slats of solid oak wood. A rare first production designed by Pierre Chapo and manufactured in his own atelier in France in 1963. This technical masterpiece was from the very first production which had the visible dowel connections of how the slats were attached to the frame. This connection is made invisible in the following productions, most likely because it was easier to manufacture it that way. The modular structure allows being transformed from a bench or single daybed...
