"Surf Culture" First Edition Book "Surf" Signed by Author John Severson
By John Severson Productions
Located in San Diego, CA
A very nice "Surf Culture" first edition of the book "Surf" signed by author, surf industry pioneer and "Surfer Magazine" founder John Severson at the California Surf Museum in Huntington Beach, CA, circa 2014. The book is in great condition with vibrant colors and measures 9.75"W x 12.5"H; it includes the original dust jacket and signed "Cowabunga John Severson" in black marker on the inside title page A "must have" for any surf memorabilia collector! #3177 The book "Surf" came out in 2014 and was characterized by the New York Times as follows: "John Severson's Surf" is a book that presents the languid-meets-extreme-thrills lifestyle of surfing through paintings and vivid photography. Presented mainly through Mr. Severson's paintings and photography, the book serves a dual purpose as a celebration of a Zeilg-like life to envy and as an implicit slap across the cheek of those status-conscious, white-collar elements that are getting ever fresher in their advances upon the wave-riding lifestyle that he helped start back in the 1950's. (Jim Rutenberg The New York Times, Styles Section) #2492 About the artist: John Severson, well known as the creator of the internationally acclaimed SURFER Magazine, grew up surfing off the beaches of Southern California. He began his career as a painter, selling his first works while finishing his Master’s Degree at Long Beach State College. In the ’50s he became the first person to create a large body of art relating to the Hawaii-California surf culture. Since then he has provided a steady output of oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints. In 1958, John used his art, photography, and surfing passion to create a popular surf movie series. His films included SURF SAFARI, SURF FEVER, BIG WEDNESDAY, and PACIFIC VIBRATIONS. Severson's smash hits posters from the ’50s and ’60s, remain collector favorites. As a surfer, Severson was known for riding big waves, and for his innovative performance style in big surf. In 1961, he won the Peru International Surfing Championships and was a finalist in the U.S. and Hawaiian Championships. With the founding of SURFER, John’s art focused on the magazine and graphics. His painting “Surf Bebop” was selected as the outstanding cover painting of 1963 by Communication Arts. Surfer During the ’60s, he authored two surf books...

Sunnylands America’s Midcentury Masterpiece Book by Janice Lyle
Located in New York, NY
Sunnylands America’s Midcentury Masterpiece By: Janice Lyle Foreword by Michael S. Smith Photography by Mark Davidson The definitive story of the most ambitious and glamorous midcentury-modern house in the United States—Sunnylands, the estate of Walter and Leonore Annenberg, in Rancho Mirage, California—now revised and expanded The pinnacle of midcentury style, an English country estate reimagined for the American desert, there is no other house like Sunnylands. A stately home, designed by A. Quincy Jones, one of California’s most signifi cant architects, it contains the only completely preserved interior by Hollywood’s legendary decorator-to-the-stars, William Haines, that is open to the public. A new book, Sunnylands: America’s Midcentury Masterpiece (The Vendome Press, October), offers an intimate tour of this legendary property. It was the early 1960s when Walter and Leonore Annenberg visited the Palm Springs area, bought hundreds of acres of desert, and created a modernist dream house at the center of their own golf course. Like the landed British aristocracy—Walter Annenberg had been the Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s in London—the couple built a retreat, where politicians, movie stars, and corporate leaders could meet, relax, and refl ect in comfort and privacy. For four decades, an invitation to New Year’s Eve at Sunnylands was the ultimate social prize. Their good friends, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, would land Marine One on the greens. Frank Sinatra was married there. Richard Nixon’s golf clubs still sit in the men’s locker room. It was a vortex of plaid pants, sherbet pastel hats, de la Renta gowns, and socio-economic power. In hundreds of photographs and architectural drawings, Sunnylands captures the careful restoration of the estate’s historic rooms, examining the drawers and the closets, the trapunto quilting and embroidery on Haines’s iconic furniture, the dinner seating charts...
