A very fine Italian 19th century porcelain plaque of Madonna della Primavera ("Madonna detter Primavera with Bambino"), after Nicolò Barabino (1831-1891). The finely painted standing Madonna holding baby Jesus in her arms surrounded by flowers, framed in a Gothic revival style giltwood carved frame. The back inscribed: "Madonna detter Primavera - nach Barabino" and handwritten "E. Guenther, Phila". Signed lower left corner, circa 1890-1900. Nicolò Barabino (1831–1891) was an Italian academic painter of religious and historical subjects, active in Florence and Genoa. He was born in Sampierdarena. His initial studies were at the Genovese Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, under Giuseppe Isola. In Genoa, he befriended Maurizio Dufour. In 1857, he won the Durazzo scholarship to attend the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He designed some of the lunettes completed as mosaics for the portals of the Florence Cathedral...

Pair of Renaissance style enamel plaques in giltwood frames French, 19th Century Dimensions: Frames: Height 24cm, width 18cm, depth 3cm Plaques: Height 13cm, width 10cm Held in ornately carved neoclassical giltwood frames, these Limoges enamel plaques depict two men rendered in the historicised Renaissance style. The frames feature oval openings, with laurel wreath carvings and bows to the top. Both plaques depict bust-length portraits of men, shown in three-quarter profile with laurel wreaths adorning their heads. They are both painted in a style that evokes the portraiture of the 16th century, with great care taken to render the details of each sitter’s face, and expressive brushstrokes for the background and clothing. This beautiful antique porcelain plaque exhibits the fine quality of craftsmanship and artistry that the prestigious Berlin porcelain manufactory, KPM, is renowned for. The plaque is delicately painted with the full-length portrait of Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1776-1810), Queen of Prussia and wife of King William III (1770-1840). Louise was a popular Queen and was respected for her successful negotiations with Napoleon, before he became Emperor of France. In this plaque, she is depicted descending the steps of the Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin, which was the seat of the Prussian monarchy. She wears a simple robe a l'anglaise, which was fashionable at the time, and looks directly at the viewer in a symbol of power and majesty.
