Mid 20th Century Central Asian Quilted Silk Ikat Chapan Robe Coat

About the Item

A beautiful early to mid 20th Century quilted silk woman's robe from the Mazar-i-Sharif region of Northern Afghanistan, Central Asia. The robe is in a traditional Ikat pattern displaying shades of purple, aubergine, magenta, peacock blue, pale yellow and pale lilac pink. It is lined in a complimentary cotton gingham with striped banding. There is an unexpected web of coral red stitching under each arm that cinches the fit and is a characteristic of a woman's robe as compared to a man's robe. This special piece is from the estate and private collection of Peggy Slappey, a well traveled lady who passionately collected textile art from Central Asia. This robe was part of a 2016 exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art which displayed textiles from Ms. Slappey's extensive collection. The robe is pictured on page 41 of the catalog and is included. Additional items from Ms. Slappey's collection are available on the Modern & Moore homepage including Ikat robes and hats. CONDITION The robe is in remarkably good condition though there are some age related discolorations at the lining as shown in photograph 12. SIZING & MEASUREMENTS The robe is small in size and would best fits a U.S. size 2 - 4 with attention to the following measurements taken with the robe closed as shown in photograph 1. Please note, though it is unstructured in the waist and skirt, it is small through the bust and shoulders. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4.
