A Rare Early Brocatelle Linen & Silk hanging - Italy or Spain Late 16th century

About the Item

Late 16th century Italy or Spain Precious panel in Brocatelle woven with arms, cherry silk warp, and linen and silver silk weft. Skilful weaving in two widths complete with their selvedges (56 cm wide), with a satin of 5 for the warp decoration, and an edged background for the weft in flock silk. Large Renaissance decoration with medallions in fleurons and pomegranates, and mullions ringed with knots. This type of lampas was used indifferently for the furniture or the dress. On the back, the three-turn stamp, indicating the origin of the archives of the Manufacture Le Manach in Tours. Some threads pulled but good structural condition. Dimensions: 135 cm x 112 cm This famous 16th century pattern from the Italian Renaissance appeared in a Florentine velvet in its first version. It was also produced during the 17th century in Italy and Spain, with slight variations in the design, in the form of damask, brocatelle or velvet. Often available in fragments, it is however rare to collect it in such a large format. A three-towered coat of arms stamp in one corner indicates its origin from the Archive of Le Manach Manufacture in Tours, which was sold at an auction in Paris about ten years ago. It can be found in several museum collections around the world, including the Royal Ontario Museum.
