Japanese bronze Koro
About the Item
Impressive handmade large and powerfully cast Japanese tripod bronze censer of the 19th century, made during the Meiji period and with mythical animals.
This unique Koro or incense burner, is elaborately cast, with fine and extensive details has a beautiful and delicate decoration: its globular body has high relief decoration with blossoming cherry trees, a background landscape on one side of the base, a Kirin and different kinds of birds including Ho-o phoenix, heron and falcon.
Beautiful Shishi lions handles, and an openwork cover surmounted by a fierce Kirin.
The upper part of the body, including the neck, is decorated with 3 friezes: the lowest is a lace-like one with geometrical design, the curvy junction between the body and the neck is etched with a vegetal garland and the neck has Chinese geometric decoration.
The 3 legs are topped by Kirin heads.
This Koro, that was made by the artist Yoshida of Kyoto in the 19th century, has his mark underneath the base. Yoshida's Kyoto bronze ware workshop was well known for producing items of extremely high quality. His work was shown at the 1876 International Exhibition in Philadelphia.
The numerous etched anatomical details such as the mane, the scales or the feathers of the mythical beasts only add to the striking effect of this extraordinary piece.
This Koro with its finely cast and impressively protruding figures, would bring an exquisite oriental accent to any home.
