Large Pair of Thai Naga Sculptures on Lucite Bases, circa 1880
About the Item
Used in Thailand as temple roof finials or in pairs at entrances to guard against evil spirits and natural disasters, the powerful, mystical naga are among the most revered Buddhist symbols. With its soaring curving form and large size, these particular naga sculptures are especially sculptural. It shows the emerging outline of the sinuous Thai cho-fa, a simplified, streamlined shape that evolved from the naga. To make the naga, a large, heavy piece of teak wood was carved in its curving shape, then fitted with shimmering colored tiles.
These pieces are weathered and patinated as pictured. They seem to have been in an entrance and possibly outdoors at one point. The patina and condition are spectacular for those that love and appreciate patina and relics in their true, authentic state. The Lucite bases have been cleaned up only but can easily be polished back to original condition. The piece is missing some of the tiles pieces and some wood is split and held together with original and very old nails as pictured.
These sculptures are phenomenal and for a true collector, decorator or designer who appreciates and understands the importance and significance of these hard to find pieces. The sculptures would look great with any style of decor or design including traditional, antique, Chinese, Japanese, Asian, Mid-Century Modern, bohemian. It is safe to say they would be exceptional in other contemporary or modern settings and would make a room or space! They are definitely a conversation piece.
